About LM Cases

LM Cases has been designing and manufacturing carrying and reusable shipping cases since 1985. We serve a variety of markets, including business, industry, government, military, entertainment and sports.

We love our work, and it shows in the quality of our products. Each of our cases is built by hand, one at a time, at our new 43,000-sq-ft. manufacturing facility in Youngstown, Ohio. Practical, ergonomic design – combined with superior materials and expert craftsmanship – result in the finest protective cases on the market today.

“Franken Box” iMac Production Workstation

This case was built for Starlight Visual. The case is designed to be a self contained mobile lighting production solution that is plug and play. The LM Cases Custom Integration (CI) department installed and provided many of the electronic components including the 2RU i/o panel, keyboard, mouse, rack drawer, rack shelf, powerstrips and electrical connections prior to shipment to Starlight Visual for the final assembly.

The "Franken Box" is based around a 27" iMac. The computer is designed to be movable in any position and can rotate 360 degrees on its mount. The articulating monitor mount is affixed to a "position control" board allowing the iMac to be laid flat during transport and raised into any position the user may desire during a show. The hinges used work on the same principal as a laptop screen: it can smoothly be moved in any position along a 180 degree plane with out the need for pins or set screws. During transportation the iMac rests on foam blocks to absorb shock and is held in a Class A scratch resistant Crosslink foam cradle that contours the shape of the computer.

Below the iMac is a 11RU shock mounted rack that houses all necessary components to drive the "Franken Box". All input and output connections from the computer and rack gear are terminated on the custom built 2RU rack panel. The rack also features a custom built 3RU - 3/8" thick clear Lexan vented security panel.

Power is handled by a 30ft retractable reel eliminating the need to carry extension cables on the road. The incoming power is split between the vertically mounted Tripplite RS1215 6 outlet courtesy strip and the UPS mounted in the rack shell.

The exterior case is built from 3/8" plywood and features 4" Colson casters, deep recessed handles and a 2 color "Franken Box" silkscreen.

Special thanks to Jon & the Starlight Visual team for an awesome project!
